MLSE’s Future of Sport Lab looks to advance Canadian sports tech industry with latest intake

  • FSL launched in 2018 and offers mentorship and resources
  • Graduates have raised US$30 million in funding to date

The Future of Sport Lab (FSL) has accepted eight Canadian sport tech startups into its incubator programme, offering the early stage companies the opportunity to work with Toronto Metropolitan University and Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE).

The programme launched in 2018, providing participants with mentorship, resources, and opportunities to develop their technology and scale their business. Graduates have gone on to raise more than US$30 million in financing and secured significant sports business partnerships.

This latest cohort include startups involved in various areas of the sports industry, including performance, fan engagement, and venue experience.

“Canada has such a passionate and innovative sport tech community. We are looking forward to working with these eight dynamic Canadian startups from across the country and connecting them to FSL’s network of sport leaders,” said Cheri Bradish, founder and managing director of FSL with the Ted Rogers School of Management at Toronto Metropolitan University.

On the playing side, the intake includes Drive Hockey Analytics, which uses puck tracking artificial intelligence (AI) and wearable technology to enhance ice hockey performance, while TiptapSPORTS is a touchless payment system for venues and DIBZ’s technology enhances the fan experience on gameday through text messaging.

BookSeats.com is a platform that allows users to book packages that combine travel, accommodation and tickets, while Innerlogic is developing software that allows sports organsiations to measure their workplace culture at all levels. Classlete, TheProgram.ai, and Vic Park Analytics focus on content, participation and engagement. 

“We are thrilled to welcome a dynamic group of entrepreneurs to the MLSE ecosystem through the Future of Sport Lab,” said Sumit Arora, vice president for strategy and analytics at MLSE, which owns several Canadian sports franchises and venues, including the eponymous Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League (NHL).
