A Listicle of Today’s Top 21 Marketing Channels

In my marketing presentation last week at the Water Quality Association (WQA) conference in Las Vegas, when I was discussing the newest forms of content, I mentioned the popularity of Listicles. Pretty much, everyone in the audience said “what’s a listicle”?”

A listicle is a piece of writing or other content presented wholly or partly in the form of a list. Some listicles are totally in list form; others are fleshed out with additional information that relates to each item.

There are 4 basic types of Listicles

Informational Listicles

These types of listicles present information in an easy-to-read list form. For example, 15 facts about the stock market or 23 fashion tips. Or in this case – Today’s Top 21 Marketing Channels

Recommendation Listicles

These types of listicles recommend products to readers. A recommendation listicle can include one product type, like the 12 best red lipsticks, or follow a theme, such as the 10 best water filters. We see a lot of listicles recommending restaurant or travel destinations.

Educational Listicles

Educational listicles feature a list of facts. Like flashcards, educational listicles quickly show the reader information as a heading, then go into details in the text.

How-To Listicles

How-to listicles outline the list of steps for doing something, like how to fix a toilet, how to write a blog post, and how to find a job. Nowadays, think video in terms of how-tos.

Today’s blog, which I have converted into a video using one of my avatars, is simply a list of the types of marketing channels that are available in today’s marketplace. The challenge for marketers is weighing the different marketing purposes and channels to create the combination that’s right for their business.

Regardless of whether you are marketing for brand awareness, lead generation, cross selling or product release, you need to use a variety of marketing channels to make yourself stand out in today’s very cluttered environment.

As I always tell my clients – test. In the last few years, technology has made it easier (and more cost-effective) for small to medium sized businesses to take advantage of different marketing channels. Channels that used to force large minimums, like direct mail/postcard marketin and geo-fencing, now have minimums smaller companies can afford.

So, here is today’s blog – a listicle of the 21 top marketing channels that are on the table today.
